Abstract:

Maintenance is the last cost saving frontier of scientific management. Top management has concentrated on production for generations, largely ignoring maintenance. The attitude of 'fix things when they break down' is slowly changing with failure analysis and preventive maintenance. The cost of maintenance is going up at an average rate of 15% per year. Higher levels of automation means a higher level of maintenance staff. Plant Engineering indicates that 18% of U. S. manufacturing companies use computers to support their maintenance management systems. Their latest survey indicates that an additional 28% would like to develop or purchase maintenance management software packages.
