Asphalt: Great Expectations

Serial Information: Civil Engineering—ASCE, 1984, Vol. 54, Issue 12, Pg. 60-61

Document Type: Feature article

Abstract:

A $50 million, five year research program has been proposed for research into asphalt as part of the larger ($150 million) Strategic Transportation Research Study (STRS). The research would define properties of different asphalts, improve testing and measuring systems, determine relationships between asphalt cement and pavement performance, and develop improved asphalt binders. With better quality control and better materials, improved design capability and performance predictions, the potential savings are $100 million a year. Comments on the proposed research are given.
