Abstract:

Automated control systems are being developed and applied to enhance the productivity and cost-effectiveness of dredges. Referring particularly to hydraulic type dredging plants, the functions of various systems and components being automated are described. The assessment and control of dredging operations are discussed to demonstrate the potential benefits of such applications. Comments are given concerning requirements for personnel training and equipment servicing. Also, certain thoughts are expressed concerning the future outlook for dredge automation in the United States.
