Abstract:

The increased difficulty of obtaining land needed for confined disposal of dredged material and phosphatic clays highlights the need to assess alternative disposal measures by accurately predicting the long-term storage capacity of containment areas. The most effective means of dewatering the dilute colloidal suspensions characteristic of fine-grained slurries incorporates natural evaporation; however, up till now a comprehensive theory describing the desiccation behavior of sediment containment areas has been lacking.
