by Stanley H. Madsen, Earth Technology Corp, Long Beach, CA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Management Planning for Survival and Growth

Abstract:

Many skills are not included in the technical training of an engineer; thus, it is not surprising that technical managers may not be good project managers. Activities outside one's technical training may assist in acquiring the needed skills to be a good project manager; however, training may be limited to on-the-job experience. This report presents methods to improve technical engineering manager's project management skills. Topics discussed include: preparation of a Project Manager's Manual to define policy and procedures, planning a series of monthly meetings to discuss and expand on the material in the Project Manager's Manual, and inclusion of project management in the performance evaluation of managers for annual bonuses.
