Exerpt from The Tower and the Bridge: The New Art of Structural Engineering describes the career and the accomplishments of Thomas Telford, a 19th Century civil engineer who was the first to use iron in ways that set him apart as a structural artist. The author's premise is that the tradition of structural art is based on efficient use of materials, economy of construction, and appearance of final form.
