Abstract:

In this paper, the finite element method of analysis is used to study the effect of pipe-soil stiffness ratio on axial forces, bending moments, and deflection of pipes of varying stiffness. Two types of backfill, soft and stiff, are used and five types of pipes ranging in stiffness from soft paper pipes to very stiff steel pipes are used. The results obtained from these calculations are compared with the well-established flexible pipe design equations.
