Abstract:

The initial work of Unesco in the area of urban hydrology was done by the Subgroup on the Effects of Urbanization on the Hydrological Environment during the International Hydrologic Decade (IHD) 1965-1974. The work of the subgroup was continued by Unesco within the new long-term International Hydrologic Program (IHP), the first phase (1975-1980) of which was launched by the General Conference of Unesco at its seventeenth session in 1972, as Project 7 'Effects of urbanization on the hydrological regime and on the quality of water'. The second phase of IHP (1981-1983) was approved by the General Conference of Unesco at its twenty-first session in 1980. The second pahse of IHP comprises a number of activities concerning the improvement of the understanding of hydrological processes through a scientific program (such as Project A. 2. 9), the development of methodologies for education and training in the field of water sciences, the promotion of an increasing awareness of the importance of water resources, and the promotion of an improvement of national infrastructures by Member States.
