Abstract:

A state-of-the-art review of seismic design of lifeline facilities is presented including some insight as to how lifeline facilities have performed in past earthquakes. Information is provided that is of value to lifeline facility owners or engineers in modifying existing lifeline facilities and equipment installation to minimize earthquake induced damage and to develop improved designs for future lifeline facilities and equipment installations. Five major areas are covered: (1) Electrical power and communications lifelines; (2) gas and liquid fuel lifelines; (3) transportation lifelines; (4) water and sewage lifelines; and (5) seismic risk for lifeline systems.
