Abstract:

The purpose of the 1983 ASCE National Conference on Environmental Engineering was to pursue scientific knowledge and promote sound engineering judgement and practice in the solution of the many environmental engineering problems facing our society today. A balanced program was arranged that includes all the areas of environmental engineering as defined by the ASCE Environmental Engineering Division Technical Committees. They are: (1) Air, noise, and radiation management; (2) solid waste management; (3) water pollution management; and (4) water supply and resources management. Sessions included presentations on groundwater contamination, innovations in hazardous waste management, water quality modeling, energy and resource recovery, sludge and solid waste management, low-level radiation concerns, water reuse and conservation, restoration of mined land, noise pollutions, and air pollution aspects of hazardous waste land treatment. Other areas stressed at the conference included innovative wastewater treatment, water treatment, water quality standards, biological and industrial waste treatment, receiving water concerns, toxics and pathogens in drinking water, groundwater contaminant transport, and indoor air pollution.
