Abstract:
EPCOT Center, perhaps the most elaborate and futuristic entertainment attraction in the world, is also a major achievement in such civil engineering-related disciplines as geotechnical, environmental, and structural engineering, land planning, and construction management. Construction of this billion dollar project was fast-tracked��from groundbreaking to opening day was a remarkable three years. This article reviews the major engineering accomplishments, including the 18-story fully spherical geosphere; the site development (on a sea of muck); the monorail system; and the energy pavilion, which is powered by photovoltaic cells.
