Abstract:

In the summer of 1982, the Science and Technology Commission of the People's Republic of China invited four United States tunnel experts to come to China to engage in technical exchanges on tunnel design and construction. They spent a week each in Beijing and Shangai, and also visited Tianjin, Xian, and Suzhou. The program included presentation of formal lectures, informal technical discussions, visits to tunnel projects, and an enthusiastically presented barrage of cultural attractions. The cultural and technological impressions of one of the visitors are presented here.
