Abstract:

This report concentrates on the state-of-the-art in the field documentation of the existing channel geometry, plus the concurrent stream flow and sediment transport characteristics, prevailing in large free-flowing sand bed rivers. The report includes discussions on various techniques, methods, instruments, equipment and procedures currently employed in making these specialized types of measurements. It is divided into five principal parts: First, an overview section identifying the type and purpose of typical hydrographic investigations; then four sections concerning horizontal positions; sonic sounding methods; velocity and discharge measurements; and suspended sediment, bed load, and bed material sampling.
