Abstract:

The Proceedings of the 1982 ASCE National Conference on Environmental Engineering includes papers on a broad spectrum of environmental issues. Over one hundred papers were presented addressing environmental engineering planning, design, operation, and monitoring issues. The sponsoring group, the Environmental Engineering Division of ASCE, consists of four Management Groups: Air, Noise, and Radiation Management (ANRM); Solid Waste Management (SWM); Water Pollution Management (WPM); and Water Supply and Resources Management (WSRM), and papers were presented in each of these categories. Several topics selected by the management groups for particular emphasis at the conference, including some invited papers, were: Noise mitigation and a status report on nuclear concerns; hazardous waste management; wastewater treatment plant effluent disinfection; and acid rain and water treatment for the removal of specific pollutants. Other topics stressed included industrial and biological wastewater treatment, solid waste landfills, wastewater sludge processing, water quality and effluent standards, air pollution control and the land application of wastewaters. Several key papers on environmental policy and energy issues were also presented.
