Abstract:

Fourteen papers representing basic contributions which made possible rapid advances in analytical techniques in hydraulic engineering are presented. The papers reflect state-of-the-art- developments in hydraulics from 1936 to 1961, and original discussions of the papers are included. The topics covered include hydraulic jump, mechanics of fluid turbulence, bed load transport, transportation of suspended sediment, drawdown test to determine the effective radius of an artesian well, diffusion of submerged jets, mechanics of manifold flow, storage and the unit graph, and laboratory investigation of rubble-mound breakwaters. Three papers investigate open channels, including the mechanics of supercritical flow, turbulent flow through open channel constrictions, and studies of air entrainment in open channel flows. The papers were selcted on the basis of originality and lasting value.

Subject Headings: Open channel flow | Turbulent flow | Suspended sediment | Supercritical flow | Sediment transport | Load tests | Jets (fluid)
