Abstract:

Experiences and advances in cone penetration testing are reviewed in these papers presented in a technical session at the National Convention of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Attention is focused on test techniques, applications, evaluation of data, case studies, and recent developments in equipment and procedures. Theory, correlations, and interpretation of cone penetration are covered in discussions of centrifugal models of the cone penetrometer, cone resistance, and soil classification. The piezometer cone and new equipment are reviewed in reports and case studies. Standards and applications are discussed including a comparison of the European standard cone penetration test (CPT) to ASTM standards. A review of offshore application of the cone penetrometer is also included. A state of the art report on penetrometer practice provides an overview of the value, equipment, evaluation, and special applications of the CPT as well as a discussion on the analytical use of CPT data.
