Abstract:

Current documentation of the state-of-the-art of structural optimization is provided. Recent developments in the field, between 1972 and 1980, are emphasized. Research in structural optimization is performed by two groups of scientists. One group emphasizes the analytical, conceptual aspect, the other emphasizes the algorithmical, numerical aspect. While this report concentrates on the numerical aspects and industrial applications of structural optimization, the analytical methods are also reviewed. Over 130 books and 1000 papers are listed as references and a section containing 22 optimization problems frequently referred to in the literature is also included.
