The matter of soil covering a steel rod, and of its influence on the wave carrying capability of the rod itself, is addressed. It is found the attenuation values of a soil covered steel rod are intermediate to that of the soil or the steel rod acting alone. It is recommended that steel rod waveguides can be used for monitoring of soil structures.
