The nature of utilitarianism is described and discussed in regard to engineers' preference of utilitarianism over other ethical theories. The advantages and disadvantages of this attitude are discussed. Theoretical and practical problems in utilitarianism are considered. Some recommendations are made to rectify these problems, which are inherent in utilitarian theory.
