Abstract:

The essays that won first and third prizes in the 1981 Essay Contest are presented. The first-prize essay, by John Huston, is entitled Stop the world I want to get off. It is a satire on how members of the other world (academia) write as compared to real world practitioners. The third-prize essay, by David Biggs, is entitled Engineering detailing: a vanishing art Though some engineers don't find them exciting, engineering details for a structure are crucially important. Failure to pay close attention to details is behind the tragic failures of many structures. The author also provides tips for improved detailing.
