Abstract:
A National Science Foundation-ASCE workshop on research needs looked at, among other subfields, geotechnical engineering. The study identified a number of research needsbased on society's needs, not the geotechnical profession's interestsand prioritized them. Some of the top needs identified are: containing hazardous wastes, dam safety, improving railroad subgrades, tunneling in soft ground, and systematically reporting failures and analyzing information on them.
