Abstract:

Fifty-six papers written by Alfred M. Freudenthal, or co-authored by Prof. Freudenthal, are included. The papers are divided into three areas: structures, theories of mechanical behavior of materials, and fatigue and reliability; they were originally published from 1947 to 1977. The structural topics addressed by Prof. Freudenthal include: forced vibrations of cylindrical sandwich shells, consolidating elastic and viscoelastic media, and ultimate strength analysis of aircraft structures. The mechanical behavior topics include: a law of work-hardening, thermoelastic equations and Grueneisen's relation, and creep behavior of an aluminum alloy under transient temperatures. The safety of structures and the minimum life in fatigue are among the subjects addressed regarding fatigue and reliability. For many papers, subsequent discussions by different authors and a final closure by Prof. Freudenthal are also included. The papers were originally published in journals and by organizations as diverse as Aircraft Fatigue, Nuclear Engineering and Design, Rheologica Act, the Hungary Academy of Sciences and the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. Extensive figures, charts, graphs and equations are included, as well as a short biography. This volume of the American Society of Civil Engineer's Classics in Civil Engineering was published in honor of Prof. Freudenthal's memory.
