Abstract:

The specialty Conference on Urban Transportation Financing examined the difficulties of providing financial support for urban transportation services that have emerged in recent years and focused attention on several aspects of current problems. Interdependencies that exist between highway and public transport services in urban areas are discussed. Operations and maintenance needs are assessed in relation to new construction undertakings. Opportunities for more coordinated use of facilities and services are identified. Needs for improved and more effective resource allocation in the field of urban transportation are examined for all levels of government. Twenty technical papers covering these and related topics of interest are reported in this volume, together with informed responses from other conference participants. The conference was sponsored by the ASCE Committee on Urban Transportation Economics of the Urban Transportation Division, in association with Bucknell University and the Central Pennsylvania Section of ASCE. Other participating organizations included the Highway Division of ASCE, Transportation Research Board, and Institute of Transportation Engineers.
