Abstract:

This structure, designed by Caracas design/construct firm Precomprimido, kills two birds with one stone: a series of huge, hollow concrete cylinders both support the service deck of the dock and retains the landfill. Design and construction proceeded simultaneously, based on preliminary design specifications. Massive cylinders were constructed and later floated into position on the Orinoco River. Cylinders were then filled with granular material, injected with cement grout and overlaid with a concrete service deck. The construction method resulted in a savings of 40% and a structure nearly twice as long as the original design.
