Abstract:

Twenty-six case histories on the design, installation and performance of deep foundations are included. The emphasis is on testing and field data. Deep foundations are explored in cretaceous sand, clay-shale, flood plain soils, fine-silty sand, gravel, Beaumont clay, soft limestone and rock. Timber, steel core, cast-in-place concrete and concrete-filled steel pipe piles are examined. Structural foundations are reviewed for steam electric stations, tall buildings in urban areas, airport structures, and sewage treatment plants. Axial and lateral load tests are described, as are bearing capacity, pull out load tests, predrilling, and uplift tests. The papers those presented at a symposium on deep foundations, with four additional papers. The symposium was sponsored by the committee on deep foundations of the ASCE Geotechnical Engineering Division. A brief history of this committee is included. Extensive equations, graphs, figures and photographs accompany the case histories.
