Abstract:

One hundred thirty-nine papers presented at the second symposium on coastal and ocean management are included. Authors are planners, engineers, government administrators and environmentalists. The management, beneficial use, development and protection of coastal zone areas is examined, with areas of concern including: conservation, enforement, legislation, jurisdictions and design parameters. Special topics include: urban waterfronts, spilled oil, coastal fisheries, barrier islands, and shore and dune management. Additionally, estuarine systems shore erosion, ocean pollution, wetlands and storm protection are explored. Geographic areas of consideration range from the Chesapeake Bay and Rhode Island to New South Wales and Kenosha, Wisconsin. Coastal power plants and water transportation are also reviewed. Thirteen agencies sponsored the conference, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the Coast Guard; Fourteen groups were affiliate sponsors, including the American Petroleum Institute and the National Park Service. Ninety additional papers and several panel discussions are cited, but were not available at time of printing.
