Abstract:

Recent developments in the analytical solutions and relevant measurements regarding pile foundations are examined. Pile foundations for both onshore and offshore structures are covered, with the equations aiming to respond to the increased use, size, cost and dynamic exposure of pile foundations. Four papers that comprised the proceedings of a session of the ASCE Geotechnical Engineering Division are included. The first reviews the concepts and available analytical results pertaining to stiffness and damping coefficients of shallow foundations and individual piles. The second addresses the response of pile groups to vertical and rocking excitation, and the third paper describes the effect of soil nonlinearity on individual pile response; both papers present new analytical solutions. The final paper reviews the use of analytical methods and experimental results for offshore applications. Extensive figures, graphs and equations are included.
