Abstract:

Republic Steel Corp. invested $20,000,000 in the world's largest billet grinding facility for conditioning steel, in Canton, Ohio. It was nominated for the 1979 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award for utilizing a different process for removing surface imperfections from newly-made steel by grinding. Formerly impurities were burned off and the steel was pickled in an acid bath. Grinding eliminates scarfing and the acid bath, saves gas, creates better steel yields and improves surface quality.
