Abstract:
Officially reborn just over two years ago, ASCE's standards effort now includes more than a dozen standards-writing committees at work or now being formed. Focus is in four areas: structures; environmental; geotechnical; and nuclear power plants. Article describes the technical problem leading to formation of each standard-writing committee, status of the standard-writing effort. Also explained is the Society's philosophy and strategy as it resumes standards-writing after a hiatus of several decades, and how the standards-writing process differs from the technical paper review and publication process. (A companion article clarifies pending federal action by OMB and FTC that would affect the young ASCE effort.)
