Chicago Type Bascule Balancing: A New Technique

This paper presents a method by which a bascule bridge may be brought into balance after the unbalanced torque is determined. Experimental observations on the Harrison Street Bridge in Chicago have shown that the torque required to hold the bridge in any given position is a very good measure of the unbalance. If a bridge were in perfect balance, zero torque would be required to hold it in any given position.
