Using extensions of the Prager-Shield theory of optimal plastic design, minimum reinforcement solutions are derived for simply supported two-span beams subject to three alternate loading conditions: A load system, PI, on the shorter span; a load system PII on the longer span; and the combination of PI + PII on both spans. Although this problem may appear somewhat trivial, the results have important implication that are outlined in the conclusions.
