Abstract:

The first segment of Washington D.C.'s rapid transit railway is now open. The system features a host of engineering innovations in the areas of aerial structures, tunneling, stations, systems operations, and materials. The total system is the largest public works project of its type ever undertaken in an American metropolitan area. Metro is a dual rail rapid transit system serving nearly 3,000,000 people.
