Abstract:

What is the outlook for man's environment in year 2000, just one generation away? Among key factors influencing it will be how responsibly we produce food, extract and use energy, how wisely we use the land, and how high the world's population rise. In energy, exhaustion of conventional sources may in a way be a blessing? at least some inexhaustible sources (solar) have fewer adverse environmental effects. In land use, the key battle will be between our traditional private ownership of land, and the need to use land in ways benefiting the public as a whole. In population, there is hope that, as they develop, the poor countries' high population rates will level off just as it has in the affluent countries. In addition to technology a key factor in fostering a quality environment will be man's spirit and will to do so.
