An elastic theory for the deflection of buried pipes has been developed based on several simplifying approximations. This can serve as a rule of thumb for design of buried pipes since it offers a quick conservative estimate for large values of pipe loading. It can also be expanded to include cases where load variations along the pipe length occur. In addition, it is intended as a first step in the development of a more exact elastic theory for buried pipes.
