Abstract:

This is the second of two articles on short span bridges. The first, in the July issue, described cost-cutting ideas in design. This article focuses on bridge decks: expansion joints, open steel grid decking, timber decks, the Iowa Method of deck construction (a very low permeability concrete overlay), waterproof membranes, plastic and wax sealing of deck concrete, and various approaches to protecting the rebars from corrosion-galvanizing, epoxy coating, stainless cladding, etc.
