Assured Upper Bounds via Complementary Energy

The problem of obtaining predictable bounds for the buckling loads of columns and plates by using the complementary energy method is reexamined. It is shown that if the admissible moments are further required to be orthogonal to all self-equilibrated moments, then the method is assured of yielding an upper bound. Explicit constraints for moments to be admissible are derived. The procedure for obtaining admissible functions is examined and is demonstrated in examples.
