A method of determining the most economic pipe sizes in compound gravity lines and branched systems is described. A trial design is changed by comparing cost changes resulting from pairs of diameter changes in various sections of the system; the pressure gains and losses for each such pair of changes balancing each other, the calculations all being made for lengths giving a unit-head variation.
