Abstract:

The current state-of-the-art and future trends in air transportation are discussed. The current state of knowledge in practice and research, and communication between designers and users of air transport systems are emphasized. Many aspects of air transportation are covered, including microwave landing systems, aviation forecasting, high speed digital navigation computers, airspace analysis, overwater operations, and aircraft communication. Considerable attention is given to airfield and runway pavements, including planning and design, configuration, evaluation and testing methods, and materials used in construction and rehabilitation. Air traffic management and control are discussed in relation modeling of the terminial area, visual approach, guidance and landing systems and flight instrumentation requirements. Airport planning, design, and management for international airports, metropolitan airports, and remote area airports are considered and case studies are presented. The federal role in air transportation is discussed, including remarks on airline deregulation. Environmental issues are also considered.
