Analysis of Restrained Columns Permitted to Sway

A numerical method for analyzing restrained steel columns subjected to combined axial force, end moments, and horizontal shear is presented. The columns are rotationally restrained at both ends and laterally restrained at the upper end. Relative translation of the two ends (or sway) is permitted to occur. The method can be used to analyze for both the elastic and inelastic response of such columns provided that the material properties are known. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the application of the method.
