Document Type: Journal Paper

In the axial motion of an elastic column slight imperfections may cause development of flexure through interaction of the pulsating axial force with flexural curvature. The conditions required for flexural growth to occur are given. Flexural modes of rather high order may be strongly excited with almost all of the original energy being transferred into flexural motion.
