Lower Mississippi River is navigable by deep draft shipping for more than 250 mi above its mouth; Congress has authorized planning of tidewater outlet for port of New Orleans separate from Mississippi River; river channels which are to be deepened to 40 ft from Gulf of New Orleans will continue to be used by oil tankers and special cargo carriers.
