A method for estimating deflection and load carrying capacity of flexible pipes is proposed. The Iowa formula is rearranged to express deflection as percentage of pipe diameter. This formula is presented in graphical form for steel and PVC pipe material. The graphs are plotted in terms of percent deflection over external load versus pipe and soil stiffnesses. These graphs are equally suitable for S.I. units without modification. The proposed method enables the designer to estimate load carrying capacity of flexible pipes very quickly.
