Document Type: Journal Paper

The method of prestressing truss and frame structures by imposing distortion states (by means of dislocations or disclinations) into the bars of the structure is presented. The self-equilibrated initial stresses caused by distortion states can be determined in large structural systems by using the network theory. The problem of optimal control of distortion states in order to reduce stresses caused by external loads is considered. Two examples are presented that illustrate the effect of increasing load-factor for the truss and frame structure due to prestressing.
