Mathematical models have been developed to predict methane migration around sanitary landfills. The methane gas that is generated during the decomposition of refuse constitutes an explosion hazard if allowed to collect in buildings adjacent to landfills. User oriented computer codes are described and design charts for preliminary assessment of migration hazards are presented. Limited field verification is presented; however, more extensive evaluation of the models is highly desirable.
