First Yield Analysis of Rectangular Levy Plates

The analysis is based on the Levy solution of the small deflection, equilibrium equations and the Huber-Mises yield criterion. However, only a limited range of load distributions are easily analyzed. First yield loads and deflection maxima are computed for two load distributions: uniform and hydrostatic, and three symmetric side boundary conditions: simply supported, clamped, and free. The results show that the nature of these quantities, as a function of aspect ratio, are similar for simply supported and clamped plates and that those for free plates are significantly different and are predicted accurately by a simply supported beam analysis. The location of the first yield point is found to be boundary condition and load distribution dependent. For simply supported plates it is also aspect ratio dependent, so that for specific aspect ratios simultaneous first yielding occurs at two fundamentally distinct locations.
