There are many applications where the true ultimate capacity in bearing of a bolt group is required, such as aluminum structures and light gage steel products; where design for which the limit load is collapse, such as transmission towers and masts; and, in general, where high tension bolts are not used. This note examines the failure of such bolt groups in which the load is directed towards the edge of the plate or end of the member connected.
