Abstract: This proceedings consists of papers presented at the specialty conference Energy in the Nineties which was sponsored by the Energy Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers and held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, March 10-13, 1991. The theme of the conference was to explore energy issues of significance for the 21st Century with emphasis on energy and environmental issues, entrepreneurial opportunities in energy, and life extension opportunities for energy production facilities. This proceedings covers such broad topics as: 1) Fossil environmental and waste issues, 2) utility structures, 3) hydroelectric power, 4) nuclear power, and 5) nonutility ventures. Some of the specific issues discussed within these topics are: 1) retrofitting fossil fuel plants, 2) creating sustainable energy systems, 3) controlling acid rain, 4) regulating hydroelectric power, 5) renewing nuclear powerplants licenses, and 6) marketing emission allowances. With their skills in large-scale project development, comprehensive planning and environmental engineering, civil engineers will play an indispensible role in solving these problems.
