Abstract: Ninety-five of the papers submitted for presentation at the first International Conference on Computing in Civil Engineering (1981) are presented. The papers are organized into 22 areas: (1) International user groups; (2) Modeling for finite element analysis; (3) State-of-the-art (Software, Networks and Distributed Processing, Algorithms); (4) Microcomputers; (5) Computer disasters; (6) Structural Engineering (7) Remote sensing; (8) non-engineering uses; (9) International computer networking; (10) Real time applications; (11) Software quality assurance; (12) Mapping; (13) Management of computer facilities; (14) Railroads; (15) Subdivision design; (16) Federal A/E contract considerations for computer aided design; (17) Geotechnical applications; (18) Computer aided design; (19) Exchanging civil engineering software; (20) Interactive graphics; (21) Hydrology; and (22) Transportation. Topics range from axisymmetric interfaces to voice digiters, and from buried box structures to land surveying and urban design. Sample titles include, “Computer-Assisted The matic Cartography,” and “Interactive Color Graphics for Watershed Planning.” The conference was sponsored by the ASCE Technical Council on Computer Practices, and co-sponsored by the Society for computer Applications in Engineering, Planning and Architecture (CEPA), and the ICES Users Group, Inc. Illustrations accompany most papers.
