Abstract: The 2009 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress held in Kansas City, Missouri, May 17-21, 2009, consisted of over 700 presentations, special sessions and workshops. The theme of the Congress was Great Rivers with about 190 sessions that ranged from asset management to low-impact development to watershed modeling to hazardous waste management to large river habitat to groundwater quality to green infrastructure to urban hydrology topics. This year.s technical program focused the engineering challenges of balancing environmental and development issues while achieving a sustainable future. It is imperative that those working on the front lines — at the environmental/water engineering nexus — share insights from research and practical experience in the field to generate best solutions for the future on issues such as river system management, environmental challenges, watershed management and restoration, dam safety, hydraulic structures, and so much more.
