Abstract:

Hydrology of urban areas is dominated by two distinct characteristics: (1) a preponderance of impervious surfaces created primarily by pavement and roofs, and (2) the presence of constructed or artificial drainage systems considered hydraulically improved because of their increased flow capacity. Urban development usually increases direct runoff volume, decreases base flow volume, and decreases runoff response time. Without mitigating stormwater management measures, larger peak runoff rates, higher flood stages, and expanded floodplains are typical consequences.
